SANKOFA CHILDREN'S CHOIR
Sankofa Children’s Choir is a 23- member leading African choir made up of children, ages 5-12, who have lost both or one parent to the AIDS epidemic or displaced by war and lived on the streets, capable of showcased as triumphant human turnaround stories.
- The choir’s music and multimedia presentation is a soulful fusion of a unique blend of native African rhythms, contemporary gospel music and ethnic dance filled with contagious joy so infectiously reflected in the upbeat music and the smiles of the performers.
- Dressed in colourful costume, the children’s enthusiastic song and energetic dance has moved dignitaries, churches, missions, schools and prisons to experience the energy, joy and hope these beautiful orphans have found.
- These concerts inform people of Sankofa's work, raise awareness of the plight of Africa, and given an opportunity to support the vital work in Africa. The vision behind Sankofa is derived from its name: An Akan (Ghanaian) word which means, “One must return to the past in order to move forward.” Expressed as a mythic bird that flies forward while looking backward with an egg (symbolizing the future) in its mouth. The choir considers how, they can fly into nations with music from their past to reach back and provide education and shelter to Africa’s needy children.
