THE CHILDREN'S SPORTS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
So far many organizations do acknowledge that the children of the world are innocent, vulnerable and dependent; and that their time should be one of joy and peace, of playing, learning and growing. And that their future ought to be shaped in harmony and cooperation.
However, the majority concentrate on helping them learn and grow; which is very good, but they do ignore play. Adding to that not much has been done so far with helping children in the most remote and rural places of Uganda live a happy and memorable childhood through play.
TMOF is using playing as one of the avenues of supplementing the global efforts towards making this the century of the child.
Play isn’t only a child development tool, but also helps check on children’s wellness. If a child has been sick and they start playing, it’s a sign that they are recovering.
“Why does the children’s era remain a dream of the dim and the distant future?
TMOF has over 500 children under her Child Sports Program. Most of them are disadvantaged. The organization now boasts of two teams (AIDSpirit and Tender Mercies) which have been birthed by this program and are now competing up to National Level with other teams from different parts of the country.
This program is designed to pass on messages that inculcate valuable social values into children during their formative ages through play. It aims to provide regular and inclusive sports and play activities as tools that:
- Enhance healthy child development that is essential to the future of healthy communities.
- Promote individual and community capacity building through a coaching approach that increases local leadership and encourages local organizational collaboration; and
- Mobilize communities around key health issues in a fun and social way, specifically through support of national healthy campaigns and national health objectives.
The Children’s sports development program introduces and encourages children to develop life skills including leadership, teamwork, fair play, self-esteem, communication and respect of others. The children easily adopt the messages and take them home, where in many cases; they influence the elders to adapt what the messages teach.
